Hanover is in desperate need of a good bakery/cafe, and I so wanted this place to be good! I went to Umpleby's over & over, hoping that somehow something would eventually taste good.
Here's the deal: The pastries not only taste stale half the time, but they don't even look good, which is unusual - normally even bad bakeries can make things look good. Their sandwiches fall apart. There is just nothing well made here. Actually, they specialize in creepy "meat pies," so being vegetarian, I can't say if those are good.
If only they had good chefs, they could be phenomenal! I mean, they have a good location, a giant kitchen. The only thing stopping them is lack of talent and vision.
Don't waste your money or time at Umpleby's. The best we can hope for is that they quietly go out of business and somebody who knows how to cook opens up a bakery in their place.

I really hate Umpleby's. None of their pastries are vegan (and a number of them actually contain meat!). There are two vegetarian sandwiches on the menu - a portobello sandwich and a hummus sandwich. The hummus sandwich contains goat cheese and the portobello sandwich contains mayo. You can request to hold these ingredients, but then you're basically paying $8 for a handful of veggies on two slices of bread. I've heard good things about the vegetarian soups, but again they tend to be cream-based. I try to avoid this place whenever possible.
